If you’re a founder or “I’ll-start-soon” founder, India’s new AI Common Compute Facility just quietly removed your favourite excuse:
“GPUs are too expensive. I’ll build later.”
Later is gone.
India has basically rolled out a sovereign AI GPU cloud under the IndiaAI Mission.
Think of it as a national GPU grid: tens of thousands of H100-class GPUs and accelerators stitched together across multiple providers.[1][2]
You don’t have to:
You plug into the IndiaAI Compute Portal, get subsidised access, and build.[3]
India is not talking about AI. India is wiring it.
If you’re serious, not just “playing with models”, there is a door for you.
(Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises)
Any India-incorporated tech/AI startup that fits IndiaAI’s eligibility criteria can apply.[5]
(the “still on Notion” crowd)
No entity yet? Come in through IndiaAI Mission Innovation Challenges, incubators, accelerators, and fellowships plugged into this facility.[6]
If you’re attached to a recognised institution or programme, or working on themes like Indian languages, healthcare, agri, climate, etc., you can be approved as an individual user under the common compute facility.[7]
Simple rule: Real problem, real project, real intent. Not “weekend GPU tourism”.
You don’t need to be a deep-tech celebrity. You need clarity.
If you can write a half-decent pitch deck, you can fill this form.
Here’s the real story:
You can prototype serious AI – LLMs (Large Language Models), RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), vision models, agents – without a Silicon Valley burn rate.
You free up capital for product, GTM (Go-To-Market), and people, instead of sinking it into infrastructure you don’t really want to manage.
If you sit in Dubai or anywhere in the Gulf and build for India or the region, you now have a powerful combo:
This is not just a subsidy.
This is India saying: “If you’re serious about building AI, we’ll meet you halfway.”
The question is no longer “Can I afford GPUs?”
The question is “Do I have the courage to ship?”
If you’re a founder or aspiring founder in India (or building for India from Dubai) and you’re not exploring the IndiaAI Compute Portal yet, you’re leaving a sovereign GPU cluster on the table.
Time to turn weekend model experiments into real companies.
